Stress is a natural part of life, but managing it effectively is key to maintaining your overall well-being. During National Stress Awareness Month, The MAC Fund encourages our patients and their families to focus on ways to manage stress by providing helpful techniques to manage stress and support overall well being.

Exercise Regularly
Physical activity reduces tension, boosts mood, and improves overall health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days.

Prioritize Sleep
Quality sleep is essential for mental health. Strive for 7–8 hours each night to improve focus, mood, and resilience to stress.

Eat a Balanced Diet
Nutritious foods fuel your body and mind. Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to help regulate stress levels.

Stay Connected
Strong social support matters. Spend time with friends and family or seek out groups where you can share and connect.

Practice Mindfulness
Focus on the present moment without judgment. Techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can help you better understand and manage your thoughts and emotions.

Make Time for Self-Care
Do things that help you relax and recharge—whether it’s reading, walking, or simply taking a quiet moment for yourself.

Special Considerations: Managing Caregiver Burnout

For those caring for a loved one, stress can take on an added emotional and physical toll. Caregiver burnout is common—but there are ways to protect your well-being while continuing to provide care.

Acknowledge Your Limits
You can’t do everything alone. Recognizing when you need help is a vital step in sustaining your ability to care.

Take Breaks without Guilt
Regular breaks, even brief ones, can help you recharge and prevent exhaustion.

Ask for and Accept Help
Lean on family, friends, or community resources. Sharing responsibilities can make a meaningful difference.

Set Realistic Expectations
Perfection isn’t the goal. Focus on what you can do, and give yourself grace along the way.

Watch for Warning Signs
Ongoing fatigue, irritability, or feelings of overwhelm may signal burnout—don’t ignore these cues. Reach out to your physician if feeling signs of burnout.

Prioritize Your Health
Your well-being matters. Maintain healthy habits like sleep, nutrition, and movement.

Seek Support
Connecting with a therapist, counselor, or caregiver support group can provide relief, perspective, and practical coping tools.

Taking small, consistent steps can make a meaningful difference in how you manage stress. This April, use National Stress Awareness Month as an opportunity to check in with yourself—and take action to support your mental health.

If you are a patient or designated caregiver and would like further guidance on stress management, including connecting with your local caregiver support groups, please reach out to your PCP.
