Fall Prevention in Winter

Winter Wellness and Safety

Winter in New England offers scenic snowscapes and cozy comforts but also presents significant safety challenges for seniors.

Falls represent the leading cause of injuries in older adults, with incidence frequently increasing during winter. Such events can result in serious injuries and may significantly affect an individual’s independence. Seniors should be cautious outdoors, especially in snow or ice.

Some safety tips to consider.

  • Clear snow and ice from walkways. Ask for help if needed.
  • Limit travel in icy or snowy weather; use delivery services when possible.
  • Take short steps, move slowly, and keep your hands free.
  • Wear nonskid, rubber-soled shoes with low heels.
  • Use assistive devices, ensuring that canes and walkers are equipped with rubber tips or ice grips to enhance stability.
  • Go at an easy pace and give yourself additional time if needed.
  • Try gentle indoor exercises, such as chair yoga or heel raises, to improve joint flexibility and circulation.
