January Showcase: National Mental Wellness Month

As we grow older, taking care of our mental wellness can help us feel more connected, confident, and resilient. Mental wellness is about more than avoiding stress—it’s about finding joy, staying engaged, leaning into community, and knowing you’re not alone. The MAC fund encourages our patients and their families to focus on their mental wellness at the start of 2026. Here are some gentle, accessible ideas for promoting mental wellness.

Stay socially connected by calling a friend, joining a group activity, or attending events at local senior center

Keep your mind active with reading, puzzles, crafts, games, journaling, or learning a new hobby

Move your body in ways that feel good, such as walking, stretching, chair yoga, or light exercise classes

Create a daily routine to add structure and purpose to your day

Spend time doing things you enjoy, like listening to music, crafting, cooking, or gardening indoors

Practice relaxation through deep breathing, meditation, prayer, or quiet reflection

Ask for support when needed—talking to a counselor, healthcare provider, or trusted person is a sign of strength, not weakness

The MAC fund encourages all of our senior patients to connect with their local Council on Aging: Find Your Local Council on Aging | Mass.gov

Massachusetts Senior Centers, or Councils on Aging, offer different opportunities for support, socialization and community, and lifelong learning- all of which can promote and strengthen independence, mental health, and well-being. Check your local Council on Aging newsletter for specific offerings and weekly schedules.
