MACIPA Leadership Team

A. Margaret Sandin, M.D.
President and Medical Director

Dr. Sandin became MACIPA’s President in 2025. She also is MACIPA’s Medical Director, a role she has held since July 2019. Dr. Sandin works closely with MACIPA’s management team overseeing all aspects of the organization. She also works with MACIPA’s members to deliver the highest quality of care focusing on quality metrics and clinical protocols. Dr. Sandin is an internal medicine physician practicing primary care at Reservoir Medical Associates in Cambridge.

Barbara Spivak, M.D.
Chair of the Board of Directors and Past President
Dr. Spivak is an Internist practicing in Watertown, MA at Mount Auburn Medical Associates. She was the President of MACIPA from 1997 through 2024 and still continues in her role of Board Chair which she has also held since 1997. She is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Diane Shapiro, MHA
Sr. Executive Advisor
Having served as MACIPA’s Chief Operating Officer for six years, Diane brings her experience and knowledge of the organization to this role, providing strategic advice and leadership to MACIPA. She works with MACIPA’s committees and leads a variety of projects as requested by MACIPA’s President. She also supervises MACIPA’s Controller and is involved in the budget development and management. Diane also manages the content and functionality of MACIPA’s website.

Kathy Franklin
Chief Operating Officer
As the Chief Operating Officer, Kathy collaborates and oversees the internal functions that support MACIPA’s mission, including Provider Services & Reporting, Case Management, Social Work, Quality Improvement, Pharmacy, and Human Resources. Kathy has worked at MACIPA for the past 20 years, starting out as the Senior Healthcare Analyst, then advancing to the Manager of Data & Contracting before being promoted to Chief Operating Officer in May 2023.

Elena Volozhanina, M.D.
Assistant Medical Director
In the role of Assistant Medical Director, Dr.Volozhanina works with the MACIPA management team on projects which support our member providers in the care of their patients. Dr. “V” practices internal medicine at Beth Israel Lahey Health Primary Care – Trapelo Road (formerly Waverly Primary Care) in Belmont. She is on MACIPA’s Board of Directors, and is Chair of the Credentialing Committee.

Nancy Tran, M.D.
Assistant Medical Director
In the role of Assistant Medical Director, Dr. Tran works with the MACIPA management team on projects which support our member providers in the care of their patients. Dr. Tran is an internal medicine physician at the Beth Israel Lahey Health Primary Care – Belmont Medical Associates in Cambridge. She is also on the MACIPA Board of Directors and a Member of MACIPA’s Finance Committee.
